The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.     如果说血与冰淇淋系列是惊悚喜剧,那这片子怎么看都是一部风格十分强烈的铅黄电影啊(比温子仁那部更铅黄)!艾丽和姗迪互为镜像,都是被欲望困住的囚徒。那些隐藏在光怪陆离背后的纸醉金迷像是吃人的恶魔,始终在张开大嘴,准备吞噬一切踌躇满志的年轻人。所以从某种意义上来说,我倾向于把它理解成一部铅黄版的《黑天鹅》。但是他这底可太操了……以及,聊女性主义但绝口不提铅黄电影的,不是坏逼就是蠢。

    怎么说呢,影片在前面60年代追忆与梦境转换的闪光之后就开始慢慢步入下坡道路,女主和黑人男友都不甚讨喜,还不如看安雅跳两个小时恰恰舞。

    技法纯熟,杂糅拼贴,没有以前那么反结构。前半段还在质疑埃德加·赖特也开始蹭女性,慢慢发现点不一样,看似不共戴天的性别对立,背后其实是权力对普通人的异化,恐怖的永远是绝对权力。观点不见得多高明,只是能在这些年这股正确浪潮中保持清醒,就眼前一亮了。唯一不喜欢的是结尾处理得太俗气。

    迷失的怀旧再现和噩梦螺旋就总是想起大卫林奇的穆赫兰道,加上如影随形存在的待宰羔羊般惊恐则是波兰斯基的The Tenant和Repulsion——不过都是淡化口味的低配了。按照Ms Collins说的,伦敦每一个房间每一个街角拐弯都死过人。不错的,这就是鬼魂笼罩的都市,到处有残秽的女王土地。60年代大概是英国音乐的黄金时代,故事也定义于音乐的框架内,甚至可能受制于视觉,在光鲜的酒吧和歌舞厅流行之间,霓虹的五彩斑斓也有黑暗的角落,被堕落的快乐和性剥削所腐蚀。导演对镜子的运用挺花哨的,但不生硬,镜子变幻就某首诗浮上脑里,借用一下——「一面镜子永远等候她,让她坐到镜中常坐的地方」。

    3.5 借当代小镇青年的都市vintage怀旧乡愁的壳讲了一个男性视角下的女性题材故事,意思就是复古和女性主义都没有处理好,导致了前半段和后半段叙事的割裂,不论是60s的SOHO/男性凝视/女性互助/小镇和城市的互动都显得十分悬置,尤其是最后的和解和男性忏悔,不还是以男性气质去形容女性吗……不过伦敦处处有鬼魂还是很有意思
